The basis of the global hotel business, its foundation now are hotel chains. They form the standards of service and hotel management, innovations are introduced.
Today in the world there are about several hundred different hotel chains. Networks have different scales: giant corporations are known, whose hotels are located in all corners of the earth, there are smaller networks and very small ones, including 3-5 hotels. The names of the largest hotel chains are heard by tourists. A rare person who is not even interested in traveling has not heard of such brands as Radisson, Best Western, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton.
Small hotel chains are much less known. However, both a huge and a small network have their own traditions, rules and standards of service.
If you believe the reports of the World Tourism Organization, this or that hotel chain owns every fifth hotel in the world. Considering that there are about 16 million hotels on the planet, it turns out that more than 3 million of them belong to the network.
Despite the long history of the hotel business, the emergence of hotel chains is a relative innovation generated by globalization. The first hotel chains originated in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. To this day, America retains leadership in the number of hotels belonging to one or another network. It is hard to believe, but more than 70% of all hotels in the United States belong to hotel chains.
The hotel chain market is currently in the final stages of its formation. Networks penetrate vertically from the most expensive to increasingly budget hotels. If in the niche of five-star hotels the business is already divided between the key hotel chains, which we mentioned above, the three-star hotel chains are actively developing.
Growing demand creates supply. Thus, the popularity of B & B hotels (Bed and breakfast) among modern tourists has led to the active development of such hotel chains. To one of the latest inventions of the world tourism industry – agrotourism – they also managed to create their own hotel chains. Such hotels are widespread in Italy, England, Spain, Portugal.
If we talk about the domestic business, then in Russia today we have formed several large hotel chains. Among them are the Heliopark network, which owns hotels in the Moscow region, and the Azimuth hotel chain, which hotels can be found in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Samara and other Russian cities.
